Can Self-Reflection be Cool, Fast and Simple?
The power of self-reflection: How to slow down, be happier, and increase productivity. Strong people do not fear alone time because it’s a chance to reflect and replenish their energy.
We live in a society where most people are constantly "busy” and "stressed out". To-dos and appointments seem to take over our lives, leaving us with little to no time to spend by ourselves offline. Sounds familiar?
How can we change this and refocus our energy in a way that stops us feeling like we don't have enough time? By pausing and reflecting!
In this blog, I explain why I can't live without self-reflection and also share the reason why I developed a tool that makes self-reflection cool, fast & simple. I even include three of my favorite questions that you can use to start reflecting today!

How often do you answer "How are you?" with "Busy!"
In my opinion, we find it difficult to make time for self-reflection because we’re conditioned to work hard and feel pressure to always be doing "more". Being busy isn't just normal, it's praised. We get our social status from our busyness.
When we're wrapped up in busyness, we think we're accomplishing things and being productive with our time. After all, busy people accomplish stuff, right? The thing is, many of us are busying ourselves just for the sake of staying "busy", but not actually investing in productive projects.
To some, being patient, pausing, and taking time for yourself sounds boring. To others, it sounds like a luxury they can’t afford.
I was sitting in a café in Amsterdam recently, having coffee and writing something in my notebook. A gentleman sat down next to me and asked me what I was studying. Studying...? I can’t even remember the last time I was in a classroom. Is working with pen and paper an exercise reserved only for students nowadays?
This chance encounter illustrates how many people see taking time offline and writing your thoughts down in a notebook as strange, foreign, and different.
"I don't have time" is nonsense
For many, our busy schedules are the reason why we find it so difficult to schedule self-reflection. But to be honest, not having time sounds more like an excuse...especially since most people spend over 2 hours a day on social media in the United States!
Why is self-reflection so good for us?
Reflection has proven benefits:
- When you take time to reflect, you give your brain the chance to create order amidst the chaos.
- You learn from your experiences and observations.
- It makes you more positive and self-confident.
Writing down your thoughts and insights is a big plus:
- We call this “downloading” your brain. When you make time for reflection in the morning, you start the day with a clean slate. When you reflect in the evening, you empty your head in preparation for a good night's sleep.
- As a bonus: no external stimuli or screens in your face. Just peace.
My self-reflection moment in 10 minutes
The simple, accessible way to I choose to self-reflect is writing in Vertellis Chapters. This journal is like a "personal coach" in the form of a book. It makes me think about what went well during my day but also what could be improved. It also helps me practice gratitude so I focus on the positive things in life.
I prefer to answer the questions in Chapters in the evening before I go to sleep, but some people prefer to write in the morning. Either one is great! What I find helps me is that the pages do not have dates. This way, I have the freedom to decide when I write. Yes… I sometimes I still get “busy” ;-)
