positive affirmations for kids

How to choose positive affirmations for kids

The great thing about childhood is that kids are learning (and expressing!) what they like, want, and need. So when it comes to choosing an affirmation for children, it’s usually best to get them involved! Kids will be more excited about trying out these new positive statements if they help decide which ones to use. But parents, caregivers, and other adults can also help by having affirmations of hand that fit the situation.

So as you and your kid(s) start creating a children’s affirmation practice, give these three different methods a try. You’ll start to see which one your child gravitates towards the most, or perhaps will love all three equally!

    1. Have children choose their favorite affirmations for kids

Anyone who’s been around a young child knows that saying “Here’s your affirmation, kid!” is not going to cut it. Just like choosing a bedtime story, kids are more likely to stay engaged and present if they choose the positive statements to use. So, if you can, let them pick their favorite children’s affirmations from the list above.

Go through the list together and see which ones your child loves most. If they can, have them write down their statements in a notebook or mindfulness journal like Vertellis KIDS. An adult can also do the writing if kids aren’t quite there yet.

    2. Have some children’s affirmations on hand

Now, it can also be a great idea to have some children’s affirmations on hand for when your child is experiencing a tough time or feeling down. Say they’re feeling challenged by a puzzle or with homework and feeling frustrated. You can remind them of a positive affirmation for kids such as “I can do this” or “I believe in myself”. Sometimes kids just need a gentle reminder!

And if your child experiences anxiety or nerves, you can also try some of these affirmations for anxiety. While not all of them may be age-appropriate, you can choose some calming statements to help your child when they’re experiencing fearful thoughts.

    3. Pick a kid affirmation of the day

Another great way to create a practice with these positive statements is by picking a kid affirmation of the day. You can write down affirmations for children on notecards or pieces of paper and have your kid draw a card from the deck or pick a piece of paper from a jar each day. That way you’ll have a new kids affirmation to work with each morning!

To have this go even deeper, you can discuss the children’s affirmation of the day with your kid. Ask questions such as:

    • What does this affirmation for children mean to you?
    • When would be a good time to use this positive affirmation for kids?
    • When’s a time when you ___ (believed in yourself, were a good friend, etc.)?

Fun ways to use children’s affirmations

Most adults practice affirmations by saying them out loud in front of a mirror, writing them down, or turning them into a meditation mantra. While you can absolutely use these methods with kids, there are so many other fun ways to practice children’s affirmations.

And keep in mind—fun is key! While many adults have a practice that feels more “serious”, kids do well with children’s positive affirmations when fun is involved. Here are a few of our favorite (fun!) ways to use these positive statements with children:

Repeat kids affirmations to each other

We all know kids like to repeat things (one more reason adults need to watch what they say as our kids start talking!). What’s interesting is this is actually part of healthy child development. Why not use it to your advantage with kids affirmations and create a fun experience for both of you in the process?

You can do this with a single children’s affirmation or a few of them. But something to keep in mind—this method is great for the really positive, energetic affirmations for kids listed above. If you can, allow kids to get loud and silly as they repeat phrases like “Today is going to be a great day!” and “I will do my best at school today!”

Make up a children’s affirmation song

Want to mix your children’s affirmations with a dose of creativity? Try making up a song! Just like learning the A, B, C’s, songs are a great way to help kids learn new information. You can use a melody they already know or create something entirely your own. No right or wrong here!

    Journal together

If you need a quieter activity, writing out kid affirmations in a journal is a great way for kids to relax and practice their writing skills at the same time. This method is great for some of the more mellow children’s affirmations, such as “I did my best today” and “I am kind to others”.

To create more of a bonding experience, adults can also write down their own personal affirmations in a blank notebook or gratitude journal like Vertellis Chapters.

Keep reminders of your child’s favorite kid affirmations around

Keeping affirmations for kids around the house is a great reminder for your child. Perhaps you can make a poster together with your child’s favorite quotes and put it in their bedroom. Or you can put a positive affirmation for kids in their lunchbox each day. Feel free to get creative and have fun with this!

    kid affirmation

Make daily affirmations for kids part of your routine

When kids are learning a new skill, we all know how important it is to practice. After all, they didn’t learn to count to 10 by listening to you do it once! Children’s positive affirmations are the same way. The best way to inspire your child to keep a positive mindset with these quotes is to practice daily affirmations for kids.

As we discussed previously, there are so many ways to use these daily affirmations. Kids need structure in their lives, but they also thrive on creativity. So feel free to mix it up! Perhaps one day you journal with your child’s favorite positive affirmation for kids and the next day you can repeat some motivating statements to each other. Or both! The important thing is to be consistent and make it a part of your child’s routine.

Best time of day to use positive affirmations for kids

So now that you know that using affirmations for kids on a daily basis is the best way to get results from this practice, you might be wondering, what is the best time of day to use them? Our answer...whenever works for you and your child! There are no right or wrong answers here. Each child is different, so it may take a little trial and error to find what time of day works best for them.

However, many families find that using affirmations for kids in the morning or at bedtime (or both!) is a great way for kids to wake up in the AM and wind down at night. Try both of these time frames—along with any others that work well for your schedule—and see what works best!

Wake up with morning affirmations for kids

Using affirmations for kids in the morning is a great way to get your child pumped and positive for the day ahead. Our suggestion here is to use children’s affirmations and practices that feel energizing and fun! If you have a child who has tons of energy in the morning, this is a great way for them to burn some of that energy off. On the flip side, if your kid needs a little help to get moving in the AM, using energizing morning affirmations for kids can get that motor running and help pump them up before they go out the door.

Mornings are also a great time to get the whole family involved with an affirmations practice! For the adults and older kids in your home, take a look at these morning affirmations. These quotes will put you in a positive frame of mind and make you feel powerful and confident as you start your day!

Use children’s bedtime affirmations to wind down at night

Children’s bedtime affirmations are also a great way for kids to wind down at night. Try some more calming statements here such as “I did my best today” and “My family loves me”. You can do this with a journaling practice as we mentioned above, repeat them quietly to one another, or turn them into a mantra for mindful breathing.

And after the kids go to bed, don’t forget to wind down with some sleep affirmations of your own. Parents deserve a great night of rest, too!

Lead by example: create your own affirmations ritual

Kids are like sponges; they learn so much from watching their parents, caregivers, and other adults in their lives. So if you want your child to gain some interest in developing a kids affirmations ritual, create one for yourself! There are so many ways you can do this, but if you need a little help, Vertellis has you covered.

We have so many resources for adults looking to develop an affirmations practice. If you’re new to this, take a look at this post on motivational positive affirmations. Not only will you get several motivating statements to use in your practice, but we’ll also teach you all the ways you can use them!

    children’s affirmations

Get creative with these positive affirmations for kids!

Please remember, all these kids' affirmations and ideas for how to use them are just starting points. Feel free to take these positive quotes and practices and make them your own! You can reword any of the affirmations for kids listed above or even make up your own from scratch. And maybe your child isn’t excited by putting daily affirmations for kids into a song or journaling with them. That’s fine! You and your child can find your own fun way to put these children’s positive affirmations to use.

If we know anything, letting kids be creative is a great way for them to learn and make this children’s affirmation practice their own. After all, we want this to be sustainable! So have fun, try some different things, and see where you and your children go when you start using these positive affirmations for kids!

            Vertellis - comfort zone

Last night was the first time I had an opportunity to ask some friends and my sister's family to play the game. I gave each a card and asked them to read it and they could choose to pass or share their answer with the rest of us. They all played(one reluctantly), but that was okay. Sharing brought up both tears and laughter. I realized I would not be able to play this game with my immediate family because it brings too much to the surface, but will take to play with my 7 close girl friends who have walked through both fire and ice with me. So thank you. I think it's healthy to let yourself feel tender and strong emotions with people you trust.
